Pages 60-80 (June 24-September 18)
Discussion Questions:
-What do some of the people in the neighborhood do that gives Zlata hope and a sense of normalcy?
-What are some of the other seemingly small things that made Zlata happy in your reading today?
-Zlata writes about the lack of communication (no phones are working, etc.). In what situations or circumstances does she find this especially awful?
-What do you think Zlata is thinking when her mother is in danger and when the boy from her drama club is killed? What made you think that?
Assignment: Zlata has to deal with death or the threat of death almost daily in her life. Today you will read about a part where Zlata’s mother could be in danger and another situation where a boy she knows is killed. Infer what Zlata is thinking in these circumstances. Use evidence from the text to support your inference.

-Zlata always writes about birthdays in her diary. Why are birthdays so important to her?
-What is Zlata worried about as winter is approaching?
-How does Zlata feel about leaving Sarajevo with her mother and aunt?
-What does Zlata know about the politics behind the war? What does she think about the politicians trying to get peace?
-How has Zlata changed over the course of the war? What evidence did you find to support your inference?
Assignment: Today as you read I want you to infer how Zlata has changed from the start of the war until now. Find evidence in the text to support your inference by paying attention to what she says, does, thinks, and feels in her entries.

-How have Zlata’s parents changed since the war started?
-How has the cold of winter and the lack of electricity changed living arrangements in the apartment?
-How does Zlata’s family take baths?
-Why was Zlata so excited about French people coming to their house?
-What inferences did you make about Braco’s decision to leave Miso behind? What in the text helped you come to that conclusion?
Assignment: Today as you read, you will learn about Braco (Zlata’s uncle) barely escaping Otes. He flees with his best friend Miso, but Miso is hit and Braco leaves him behind. I want you to infer what Braco was thinking when he left his best friend to save his own life. Find evidence from the text to support your inference.

-What problem does Zlata have with her bird?
-Zlata walks by the market and sees all the items for sale. Where does she think the people are getting them? Who do you think is able to buy the things there if most “ordinary people” can’t afford it?
-Zlata reflects on the start of the war, which was a year earlier on May 2nd. What does she say about the anniversary of the war starting? How are her feelings about the war different now than when it started?
-Why do you think Zlata writes that she feels like dying? Do you think that she was serious or that she was just really sad? Do you think it might be a normal feeling for someone living in a city taken over by war?
Assignment: On April 17th, Zlata expresses deep frustration with the war and if it will ever end. She writes that she wants it to end so bad that she feels like killing herself. Why do you think she would say that? Find evidence throughout her entries (you may have to look back to other parts of the book) to support your inference.

-Why do you think Nedo leaving was so hard for Zlata?
-Look at page 155 where Zlata writes the speech she gave at the book promotion. In her speech, she uses a lot of descriptive language. Can you find any examples of figurative language? Why does she use those comparisons? What do they mean?
- How did the book promotion change Zlata’s attitude? What did she realize even after she was initially happier?
